Choose a focal area

Choose whether the face, gesture or drapery is the focal area. Reduce color variation elsewhere and reserve the brightest accents for the focal region. Preserve the existing forms and symbols of devotional figures.

Three-layer exercise

Apply a dark bronze base, then dab muted green into selected recesses. Once dry, add a small amount of warm metallic color to chosen raised edges. Keep enough bronze visible instead of covering everything with a green filter.

Review and alternatives

Photograph before and after under the same lighting. For a polychrome version, try vermilion, mineral green and ivory within the same layer structure. This is a contemporary color exercise, not a historical reconstruction.

Before calling it done

Test the paint system on a spare part. Review at normal viewing distance. Record colors and save a comparison photo.
